Decentralization on Burrow Part 1: Front End

An Update to the Burrow Community

Decentralization is paramount. It means free and open access by anyone on the same terms and on an even footing. Today we’re doing our part to push the process of decentralization forward.

As it relates to software, although there are many Intellectual Property licenses that let others use a creation freely, they are all still premised on the principle that someone owns that creation; the creation is being LICENSED, and the owner is granting permission to others. It is owned. It is controlled.

The true end state of decentralization is that there is no ownership, there is only access. This is the classic notion of “the commons” — a space that is not owned, but that can be freely used and accessed by anyone.

With that in mind, as of October 8th — as first announced on Twitter — we are dedicating the Burrow front-end code and associated Intellectual Property to the commons. To that end, on the current site, you will find a Declaration of Abandonment setting forth this specific dedication.

We are intentionally disclaiming any and all rights or ownership of the front-end IP, and have no more ability or right to influence, access, or use it than anyone else. Through abandonment of the front end IP and commitment to decentralization, we look forward to seeing the community build new and varied front ends to the protocol.

Relatedly, please note that the version of the front end that is hosted on will soon not be available to users in the U.S. So, if you are a U.S. user, please make sure to liquidate your positions and/or engage with the protocol directly or via other front ends.

Again, we can’t wait to see what the community does with the IP and look forward to new iterations that help increase decentralization of the space in general.
